We were delighted to host our first Regis summer 5’ a side tournament on Saturday 17th of June at Powerleague in Glasgow.
After the initial interest in the event, we were looking at hosting a 16-team match. Due to call off’s in the week leading up to the big day, our numbers were cut to an excellent but exhausting 8 team tournament!
Everyone was treated to a typically warm Regis welcome. With our 8-team format, every team played each other once in a 10-minute game with a 5 minute break in between games. Our not so typical Glasgow weather took its toll on all teams as the sun made its first and only appearance so far this summer!
During the group stages, it would be fair to say the Regis team struggled with not only the heat but also being a man down due to the fitness of office manager Ross Mather. He has since been put on a strict training programme to ensure there is no repeat next year. However, team Regis managed to progress from the group stage to the Semi-finals and were followed by Yellowcom, Glasgow Council Roofers and Procladd.
The Semifinals were a tough affair and after some great football skills and plenty of nail biting on the sidelines, Yellowcom progressed from their game against Procladd and team Regis were knocked out on penalties by the Glasgow Council Roofers.
Despite only having a team of five, Glasgow Council Roofers were asked to choose a player to help and selected none other than our very own Stevie Gorman. After a nail biting game, the Glasgow Council Roofers came out on top with a last minute winning goal and broke the hearts of the Yellowcom boys. Stevie Gorman was awarded 2 trophies and was delighted with his performance.
Our Managing Director Mike Saini, who came along to spectate was delighted with the success and turnout of the tournament and is planning next year’s tournament. When details come out for next year’s tournament, we advise getting your entries in early to avoid disappointment!
A special thanks goes out to Powerleague Glasgow in particular Pamela Swanson and Kevan Travers who’s organisation and direction on the day was superb! Also to our own Stevie Gorman who spent many hours on making sure the whole day and night was a terrific success with his usual meticulous planning and attention to detail. The final thank you goes to everyone who made the effort to come out and contribute to a really great day!
